The ability to identify organisms individually allows us to address questions about how the characteristics of these individuals including their behavior, morphology, and prior experience affect their movement and interactions with other members of the community. Funding from NSERC’s Research Tools and Instruments grant program allowed us (co-PIs: Ken Welch, Marty Krkosek, James Thomson) to purchase an array of antennae designed to detect and record animals tagged with small radio-frequency identifier tags. The project this summer will focus on establishing this array and testing the system as well as running pilot studies that allow us to examine the traits of adult dragonflies associated with dispersal between experimental ponds (cattle tanks).
